ARTIST'S STATEMENT
|
All my art quilts are developed from original designs. Both my more geometric quilts and the
landscapes are inspired by my visual impressions of everyday life and nature.
I have experimented with sculpture, painting and glass, but not until later did I discover fibers and fabric as my favorite art mediums. I feel they give me the best of both worlds. The raised effect of a sculpture, the colorful mood of a painting, and the linear element of
a composition, result in the tangible, touchable art I strive to depict. My quilts are not just a mental image of something I long to express, they are the expression
themselves
Landscapes and other pictorial images are a longtime favorite of mine, they are expressions of the beautiful images and formations of nature.
My latest works are constructed in a variety of cotton fabrics, commercial prints, batiks and hand-dyed fabrics, along with a number of sheer fabrics like silk and organza. They are heavily quilted, and stuffed with cotton fibers to create a raised surface that will bring that part of the quilt closer to the viewer. In my quilts I use a wide variety of threads and yarns, which are used for quilting, couching, or embroidering the quilt-top.
I enjoy all aspects of quilt-making. Designing, piecing, layering, quilting, and finishing. The machine-quilting, however, is what brings my quilts to life and I love watching them change in the process. I use my sewing machine as a drawing tool, and therefore do not mark my quilts before quilting.
Three dimensionality is no longer an illusion, it is the quilt and can be touched and experienced.
